C3. Globalization & Social Responsibility
Here are some some videos and links to other resources which relate to some of the expectations found in this part of Strand C.
3.1 The Truth Behind American Apparel
Short, thought-provoking video which could stimulate a lot of different discussions in class.
3.1 Bangladesh Factory Collapse
This video reviews the collapse of the Bangladesh factory which made Joe Fresh brand clothing. Since it is a Canadian brand, our students may be able to better connect to the idea of sweatshops and consider what is their role as consumers.
3.2 Hundreds Die in Bangladesh Factory Collapse As Retailers Reject Better Safety Standards
This video introduces regulations that affect the safety of workers and the profits of garment companies.
3.2 Protect Children in the Fashion Industry from Exploitation
The former model in this video suggests the need for a union for child models in the fashion industry. Students can discuss how this compares to factory workers making the garments that the models are wearing.
3.5 Fashion Futurist
Suzanne Lee talks about how and why, as a designer, she grows materials using minimal resources and living organisms like bacteria. We should look to biology for solutions to the smart, sustainable consumer products of tomorrow.
3.5 Redressing the Fashion Industry
Orsola de Castro, an up-cycling pioneer with her own label (From Somewhere), brings awareness to green fashion - the belief that turning 'waste to fashion' can foster healthy attitudes on sustainability in fashion.
3.3 Building an Environmentally Sustainable Business
Blake Mycoskie, the creator of TOMS shoes created a unique One for One business model, which provides a new pair of TOMS shoes to a child in need for every pair purchased.
3.4 Wearing Nothing New
Designer Jessi Arrington explains how you can love fashion and still shop at thrift stores.
3.4 Abercrombie & Fitch Anti-Bullying Campaign
As a result of some consumers boycotting this clothing brand, this company has come back and seemingly trying to change their message. Discuss with your students about what power consumers have.

Other Useful Resources for C3
This slide show (posted on slideshare.com by David Lawson and David Buhr, 2006) could be used to introduce sweatshops to your class. It includes some information specifically about well known stores and brands, including WalMart and Nike, that support sweatshop factories.
